Association of the Miraculous Medal

The story of the Miraculous Medal is a true and inspiring one about a French girl named Catherine Labouré. Upon losing her mother to illness, nine-year-old Catherine took a statue of the Blessed Virgin down from a shelf in the bedroom of her parents and said, “Now, dear Blessed Mother, now you will be my Mother.”

After helping to raise her siblings and care for her widowed father, Catherine became a postulant in the Daughters of Charity motherhouse in Paris, France. In July, 1830, on the eve of the feast of Saint Vincent de Paul, Sister Catherine prayed that she would see the Blessed Mother face to face.

That very night, Mary appeared to Catherine, giving her a mission. She told Catherine that the whole world would be upset by miseries of every kind. There was a remedy, however. Our Lady said, “Come to the foot of the altar. There graces will be shed upon all, great and little, who ask for them. Graces will be especially shed upon those who ask for them.”

On November 27, 1830, Mary appeared again to Catherine. She was to have a specific image etched on a medal and given to the whole world. Mary said, “All who wear it, will receive great graces.”

Catherine did as instructed, and almost immediately, blessings began to shower down on those who wore Mary’s medal. The devotion spread like wildfire, and before long, people were calling it the “Miraculous” Medal. Within ten years, 100 million medals had been distributed throughout the world!

The Association of the Miraculous Medal here in Perryville, Missouri, carries on Saint Catherine’s mission today, bringing Jesus to the world through devotion to our Lady and her Miraculous Medal.

Three years ago, our Lady’s Association set and achieved the goal of distributing one million Miraculous Medals as a gift presented to our Lady on her birthday, September 8. This year, as a way of kicking off the Association’s next 100 years of service and with the power of so many great members, we are setting a new goal of distributing two million Miraculous Medals by our Lady’s birthday. We need your help!
