Association of the Miraculous Medal

In 1846, just sixteen years after our Blessed Mother appeared to Saint Catherine Labouré with the message of the Miraculous Medal, another French Daughter of Charity, Sister Louise Apolline, received the gift of another powerful sacramental.

This time the messenger was Jesus, himself, and the sacramental was a Red Scapular. The front of the scapular showed Christ on the cross and contained the words, “Holy Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ, save us.” The back of the scapular contained images of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary being adored by angels with the message “Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary protect us.”

Sacramentals like the Miraculous Medal and the Red Scapular are channels of God’s grace because they lead us to prayer and a deeper communion with our Lord Jesus. In both devotionals, our Blessed Mother’s maternal care is sought as the surest intercessory prayer of all the saints. It was the Immaculate Heart of Mary that was pierced by the sword of her Son’s passion and death, but it is also the purity of her Immaculate Heart that elevated her to the role of Heavenly Queen after our Lord’s triumphant resurrection.

I am writing to invite your participation in this great miracle of man’s redemption. Jesus wants to bestow mercy on each and every heart, and through the prayers of his and our Blessed Mother, he will do it.

Please send me your most pressing prayer intentions which will be remembered in a special Mass at our Lady’s Shrine on July 26 (the anniversary date of Sister Apolline’s first vision of the passion of Jesus Christ). By doing so, you will be included as a member of the Association of the Miraculous Medal here in Perryville, Missouri. Here at the Association we distribute millions of Miraculous Medals each year and pray for tens of thousands of members throughout the world.

And if you are interested in also practicing the beautiful devotion of the Red Scapular, we have some here at our Lady’s Shrine to send you. This unique Red Scapular has a small pocket in the back in which we will slip a blessed Miraculous Medal inside so that both can be worn simultaneously.

Finally, you are invited to burn a Votive Light here at our Lady’s Shrine, to accompany your prayer intentions, and to symbolize the power of your prayer being lifted up to Jesus through Mary, the Immaculate Conception.

Thank you for taking the time to learn about the Miraculous Medal and the Red Scapular. I hope you will join our Lady’s Association in spreading the word of their origin and in helping us bring more hearts to Jesus through the loving, maternal intercession of our Blessed Mother Mary, Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, and the Immaculate Conception.

Sincerely yours in Mary,

Fr. Kevin McCracken, C.M.
