Association of the Miraculous Medal

"You're in good hands!" We hear it so often that the significance of these four words can sometimes be overlooked. Perhaps they are shared with an elderly parent or relative moving into assisted living. Or maybe they are whispered to a child being left with a new babysitter for the first time. But probably more often then not, they are given to a friend or neighbor when simply recommending a new physician, handyman, or stylist.

What we mean when we tell someone, "you're in good hands" is "don't worry, I want what is best for you , and I am sure this person does, too."

As Jesus was drawing his final breath on the cross, he proclaimed to the Father, "Into your hands I commend my spirit" (Luke 23:46). Jesus knew that he was placing his life in good hands, and in this proclamation, he was instructing and encouraging the world to do the same. When we turn our will over to the Father, we are following in Christ's footsteps and commending our souls to God.

As Catholics, we believe that the saints, and especially our Blessed Mother, help us on our journey through their intercession on our behalf. In particular, when we place our joys and concerns into the hands of Mary, she presents them directly to her Son, Jesus Christ.

What is going on in our life right now that needs to be put into good hands? Do you have hopes, dreams, or concerns that deserve the loving attention of our Blessed Mother? Undoubtedly you do, and I invite you to physically and spiritually place them in Mary's hand.

In the year 1830 in France, Mary Immaculate appeared to a young religious sister by the name of Sister Catherine Laboure and gave her the image of a medal to be worn as a devotional and reminder of Mary's maternal intercession. So many people asked, and so many prayers were answered, that this medal became known as the Miraculous Medal worn by millions around the world.

Our Lady's Association just celebrated its centennial year, and many of our members generously donated to help renovate the Shrine Church and grounds. One of these gifts is a stunning bronze statue of our Lady as she appeared to Saint Catherine. On an incline behind the statue of our Blessed Mother is a bronze statue of Jesus. These statues are a visual representation of our mission at the Association to bring souls to Jesus through the intercession of his and our Blessed Mother.

Please allow us to literally place your most heartfelt intentions into the hands of this statue of Mary as a symbol of your spiritual presence as we join you in praying to Jesus through Mary for the favors you are seeking. All you have to do is send your intentions by September 23. Your intentions will be remembered in our upcoming octave of prayer in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary, October 7-14, which includes the feast day, and in the daily Mass and prayers at our Lady's Shrine through the month of October.

You are also invited to burn a Votive Light as a sign of your prayers entrusted to Mary's maternal care.

As a way to honor our Blessed Mother for her holy intercession, we are offering two unique gifts which can be requested individually or as a set. One is a six-inch poly resin bronze gold finish replica of the Shrine's new statue of Mary...the very same one upon which we'll be placing your intentions. The other gift is a beautiful rainbow crystal bead rosary in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary.

Our Mother Mary wants you to be in good hands. In fact, she wants you to be in the best hands...the hands of our Lord Jesus. By placing your life and your prayers into Mary's hands, you are asking her to place them in God's hands, and she will intercede on your behalf.

Thank you in advance for your loving support of our Lady's Association and your confidence in her promise to obtain God's grace for all who ask. You are in great hands!

Sincerely in Jesus and Mary,

Fr. Kevin McCracken, C.M.
Spiritual Director

P.S. If you have the opportunity to visit our Lady's National Shrine, please be sure to take a walk on our newly renovated grounds, and include a stop at the bronze statue of our Lady where her open hands wait to hold yours.
