Association of the Miraculous Medal

Dear Friend,

The lazy days of summer have come and gone, and ready or not, it’s time to go back to school. Parents are checking supply lists, teachers are preparing classrooms, and students everywhere are maximizing their final days of “freedom.”
Of course, true freedom isn’t found in rest and recreation, though both are important for good health. Real freedom is found in knowing our Lord Jesus. Through his teaching and example, Jesus instructs us in the way of goodness, for ourselves and for others, and he gives us the grace to pick up our crosses and follow him. Saint John Paul II said it beautifully, “Freedom consists not in doing what we like, but in having the right to do what we ought.”
I imagine you know someone - a child, a teacher, a staff member - who is returning to school soon, and who cherishes the right to follow God’s will.
Please send me their names so that they may be included in my own personal prayers, and in the prayers and Masses here at our Lady’s National Shrine. Your intentions will remain at the Shrine throughout the coming school year.
You can also offer your loved ones special encouragement by sending them the
"Back to School" Votive Light Card. Your card will let them know you’re thinking
of and praying for them.
The beautiful image on the card will also be a reminder that Mary, the Mother of God, accompanies them every step of the way. Just as our Lady instructed and cared for Jesus 2,000 years ago, she continues doing so today for all who seek her intercession.
Finally, I encourage you to share the inspirational story of our Lady’s appearance to Saint Catherine by giving the returning students and teachers in your life their very own Miraculous Medal. The Association has many beautiful medals to choose from, including one with a lobster-claw clasp that conveniently attaches to backpacks and keychains. By making a gift of $10 or more today, we will be happy to send you this medal to share.
School is the quest for truth. In our Catholic tradition, we know that there is one Truth, one Life, and one Way, and his name is Jesus Christ.  Mary, the Mother of our Lord, brings us to her Son, and she intercedes for parents, grandparents, and guardians, guiding them in their efforts to educate the next generation, just as she and Joseph did for Jesus.
Thank you for all you do for our Lady’s Association.  Your prayers and support are an inspiration to me and so many others.
May the returning students and educators in your life find comfort in Mary’s care, and may the grace of our Lord Jesus be upon each one of them in the days, weeks, and months ahead.

                                                                             Sincerely in Jesus and Mary,
                                                                             Fr. Kevin McCracken, C.M.
