Association of the Miraculous Medal

Chances are you recognize the words above from the Guardian Angel prayer. So many of us grew up reciting this prayer - “ever this day” in the morning, and “ever this night” in the evening. Do you remember the opening words? “Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits me here.”

As our students, teachers, and staff members return for a new academic year, let us remember that in his love, God really does commit each one of his children to the spiritual protection of a guardian angel.

I underline the word spiritual for two reasons. First, angels are pure spiritual beings. They do not have physical bodies that we can see, but they are at our side nonetheless! Second, their mission is to bring us to God. Our guardian angels, while certainly capable of protecting us physically, are most concerned with enlightening, guarding, ruling, and guiding our souls. These spiritual warriors are determined to bring us to our heavenly home by aligning our wills with the holy will of God.

Will you join me and tens of thousands of other Association members across the country in praying for our returning students and educators?

Please send me their names so that they may be included in my own personal prayers, and in the prayers and Masses here at our Lady’s National Shrine. Your intentions will remain at the Shrine throughout the coming school year.

You can also offer your loved ones special encouragement by sending them the new “Back to School” Votive Light card. Your card will let them know you’re thinking of and praying for them.

The beautiful image on the enclosed Votive Light card reminds us that God truly does commit us to the spiritual protection of our guardian angels. He also commits us to the maternal protection of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal. Just as Mary instructed and cared for Jesus two thousand years ago, so too does she form us in his love today through her motherly intercession.

Finally, I encourage you to share the inspirational story of our Lady’s appearance to Saint Catherine Labouré by giving the returning students and teachers in your life their very own Miraculous Medal. The Association has many beautiful medals to choose from, including one with a large lobster-claw clasp that conveniently attaches to lanyards, backpacks, purses, and keychains.

Please know that we are praying for you and your loved ones here at our Lady’s National Shrine. May the returning students and educators in your life find great comfort in Mary’s care. May they experience the spiritual guardianship of the angels to whom God’s love commits them. And may the grace of our Lord Jesus be upon each one of them in the days, weeks, and months ahead.

Thank you so very much for your prayers and your support!

Sincerely in Jesus and Mary,

Fr. Kevin McCracken, C.M.
Spiritual Director
