Association of the Miraculous Medal

Dear Friend,

I pray this letter finds you healthy and hopeful. Your family at the Association of the Miraculous Medal continues to lift you up in our daily Mass and prayers here at our Lady’s National Shrine in Perryville, Missouri.

While these challenging times have strengthened our resolve to pray for you, lifting our members up in prayer is not a new tradition for our Lady’s Association. It’s a practice that goes back to our earliest roots and is grounded in God’s love for his and our Blessed Mother whom he lifted up in the beautiful mystery we know as the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Beginning Thursday, August 6, at 8:00 a.m., CT, we will honor our Blessed Mother with a special Assumption Novena of Masses.

On each of these nine days, we will celebrate the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass in devotion to Mary, asking her to help us, like her, enjoy heavenly glory at the end of our earthly lives.

In preparation for this beautiful novena, I urge you to send me your special prayer intentions to be placed at our Lady’s Altar for remembrance during each of the nine Assumption Novena Masses, as well as in the Solemnity Mass itself on August 15.

You may also wish to burn a Votive Light at the Shrine as an expression of your desire to honor Mary and seek her intercession. All donations will help the Association bring hearts to Jesus through Mary. Your kindness will also assist the Vincentian community in its ministries of evangelization and service to the poor.

Mary’s Assumption reveals to us the final fruit of life in Christ. Mary’s faith and trust in God were tested repeatedly. This is why you should never be discouraged by life’s struggles. Yes, Baptism freed us from original sin, but until we are perfectly united with God in heaven, our earthly pursuit of sainthood will always be a journey.

Thankfully, our Lady intercedes for us, and the image of the Assumption is a beautiful reminder of this. Please join our Assumption Novena of Masses and the Solemnity Mass in spirit by sending your special prayer intentions to participate with us as we pray for you and all the Association’s members, August 6-15. The image you see on the header of this letter is the exact image found above the main altar here at Saint Mary’s of the Barrens Shrine Church. The painting was imported from Germany at the beginning of the 20th century and was installed here during the Shrine’s renovation of 1920. After 100 years, it’s no wonder that many members and locals still refer to the Shrine Church as the Church of the Assumption!

As a reminder of just how powerful our Lady’s intercession is, I want to share the testimonial below from an Association member.

“I have been wearing the Miraculous Medal for the past 65 years. When I was seven years old, my aunt purchased the medal for me at a parish mission service. It is my most valuable possession. Throughout my life, this medal has offered me comfort, consolation, direction, and hope through a variety of challenges. I would hate to ever be without it since it is a sign of my faith in our Blessed Mother and her Son, our Lord, Jesus. I have been truly blessed as has been my family. That has not been more evident than when I was diagnosed, five years ago, with an aggressive cancer with a 15% survival rate. I am currently cancer free. I attribute that to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal. I know she heard my prayers and interceded on my behalf. I pray to our Mother of the Miraculous Medal every day. Our God is good! Our Blessed Mother is a help for all who seek it. Thank you Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal.”

You are in our prayers. May Jesus bless you, and may Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal keep you in her tender, maternal care.

In the love of Mary,

Fr. Kevin McCracken, C.M.
Spiritual Director
