Gospel Reflection for July 7
Fr. Luke passed away on August 10. Prior to his illness, he had prepared gospel reflections for each Sunday of the Liturgical year. We will continue to share his wisdom and faith.
Besides her great privilege of being the Mother of God, Mary was also her Son’s first disciple. She is often called the Model, or Exemplar of the Church. Following her example, we walk with her through the Gospels as we reflect on her response to God in her life.

July 7, 2019—Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

  Luke 10:1-9, 17-20

Father Oscar Lukefahr, C.M.

A First Things magazine article on children’s literature quoted Jack Prelutsky’s poem, “A Mother Goblin’s Lullaby.” “Go to sleep, my baby goblin, hushaby, my dear of dears, if you disobey your mother, she will twist your pointed ears.”

Prelutsky writes delightfully wacky children’s poetry, sometimes with a moral. His lullaby, for example, shows that sins like disobedience have unpleasant consequences. That’s important on this 4th of July weekend, as we pray for our country.

Love for country and love for God go together. But some people want to blot out this connection with false notions of separation of church and state. Atheists like Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris claim that religion was not important to the founders of our country. Time correspondent David Aikman shows that this claim is absurd. In his book, The Delusion of Disbelief, he quotes those founders in a chapter titled, “The Christian Worldview is the Foundation of Liberty.” A few examples...

George Washington stated: “...it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection...”

John Adams, our second president, said: “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people.” Benjamin Franklin affirmed: “Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom.”

In the Gospel, Jesus sent out disciples to preach the Good News. Jesus sends every one of us to do the same. We need to spread the word that true religion is necessary for the survival of our country. The founders of our nation believed this! Our country will stay great only if we live virtuous lives and share the Gospel truth.

Mother goblin told her baby: “If you disobey your mother, she will twist your pointed ears.” In the Gospel, Jesus gives us better things to say to our nation: “Peace to this household. The kingdom of God is at hand for you!”
