Gospel Reflection for January 6
Fr. Luke passed away on August 10. Prior to his illness, he had prepared gospel reflections for each Sunday of the Liturgical year. We will continue to share his wisdom and faith.
Besides her great privilege of being the Mother of God, Mary was also her Son’s first disciple. She is often called the Model, or Exemplar of the Church. Following her example, we walk with her through the Gospels as we reflect on her response to God in her life.

January 6, 2019—The Epiphany of the Lord

  Matthew 2:1-12

Father Oscar Lukefahr, C.M.

A Scout leader told her Brownies: “Remember, girls, if you’re lost in the woods at night, get your directions from the sky. A glow will lead you to the nearest shopping center.”

Fortunately, the Magi in today’s Gospel were led, not by the glow of material things, but by the light of a star ... to Jesus! They are models for us. An essential part of life is the journey to Jesus: walking the inner roads of our heart and soul, discovering our identity as children of God, realizing the true purpose of life, finding Christ within us.

Like the Magi, we embark on a long journey, realizing that it lasts a lifetime. We don’t make the journey alone. When the Magi reached the place where Jesus was, they found him with Mary, his Mother. Mary surely told the Magi that her Child was the object of their search, and she must have invited them to hold Jesus close to their hearts. She speaks the same words and offers the same invitation to us!

Getting to know ourselves as children of God, discovering the real meaning of life, and finding God can be an exciting journey, a great adventure, especially in the company of Mary. May Jesus be the Star leading us on.
