Memorial Day Remembrance Title

I have a friend who was a soldier in World War II. He is well into his 80’s and is still very active. When I listen to him talk about the war, I am reminded of the phrase I heard about those who served in World War II: “They gave everything and asked for little.”

Many people fit that wonderful description, especially those who have served or are now serving in the military.

As the United States continues to fight wars on two fronts, we are especially concerned about the men and women who are fighting these wars, far from home and their loved ones. This is a fine opportunity to pray for that person and to say “thank you” to them.

Traditionally, we think of Memorial Day as a civic holiday honoring those who have given their lives for their country. It is also a good day to pause and take a quiet moment to reflect, to remember, and to pray for our loved ones who “gave us everything and asked for little.” It is indeed a prayerful day, to cherish those memories and pray in gratitude.

Prayerfully remembering all our faithful departed on Memorial Day is a long-standing tradition here at our Lady’s Shrine. Send the names of your beloved departed and your intentions to our Lady’s Shrine. I will remember you and your departed loved ones in the Mass on Memorial Day and I will keep your intentions at our Lady’s Shrine.

You may want to light a Votive Light for your departed loved ones. In fact, some burn a Votive Light at this time for each of their loved ones. Still others keep a Votive Light burning all year—as a reminder of God’s eternal love for their dearly departed.

Any offering you send will promote devotion to our Lady of the Miraculous Medal. You will help support our Vincentian missionaries, seminarians, and senior Vincentian priests and brothers. You will bring pastoral care to the poor. Vincentians all around the world work with the lowly and most abandoned of God’s children.

Sincerely yours in our Lady,

Fr. James Ward
