Mission News from Kenya

We continue to receive reports about the violence in Kenya and its effect on members of the Vincentian Family there—

Things are still very tense...burning, killing, and looting, especially in slums and in certain areas.

Right now, the members of the Vincentian Family are safe.  We are okay and fine but feeling the outside pressures here inside our compound at DePaul Centre.  We only go out to get milk, bread and a few items in the daylight.  We have been using all our frozen meat and food from our dining room storerooms to feed our community.

And of course, we must feed the guards at the gate and Brother Jim’s workers in the carpentry shop.

Our Vincentians who staff our outlying parishes in Thigio and Kamulu are staying at their parishes since travel along country roads is very dangerous.  They are working hard asking the locals not to form vigilante groups, which only contribute to the tribal fighting.

So much of the fighting has taken place in the Kibera slums where the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul runs a nursery for the children (which Association members helped found and build).  The Daughters of Charity were able to get some of the children out of the slum safely to their residence next to DePaul Centre.  They are reaching out to other orphans too.

We need PRAYER.  Please have everyone pray for peace in Kenya.  We are very worried about the safety of our Vincentian seminarians and their families who live in the outlying areas of Kenya and who have not been able to make the journey to DePaul Centre.

Please pray for those who have lost their lives in the fighting and bloodshed that have wracked the Kenyan cities, slums, and countryside.  Also, remember in your prayers those who have lost their loved ones, their homes, businesses, and others whose lives have been torn apart by the rioting and violence.

The very poor always seem to suffer the worst in situations like this, and their needs are even greater now.  So please continue to support us as we carry on our ministry to the poor in the name of Saint Vincent de Paul.

Please help support our Missions in Kenya and around the world.
