Our Lady Cares for Us
Mary and baby Jesus

Mary has been known by many titles throughout our Church’s history—Morning Star, Queen of Heaven, Mystical Rose, and Handmaid of the Lord, to name just a few. And of course, we know her here at her Shrine as “Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal.”  But I think the one title that fits her best is “Mother.”

We see many biblical images of Mary as “Mother”—

  • a radiant young girl, as she lovingly tends to her newborn Son, the Messiah,
  • a worried mother, frantically searching for her Son when he was lost in the temple,
  • a concerned guest at the wedding feast at Cana, asking her Son to help the unfortunate bride and groom who have run out of wine,
  • a grieving woman, weeping at the foot of her Son’s cross,
  • and as the Mother of the Church on Pentecost.
First Apparition of St. Catherine to the Blessed MotherThe image of Mary as mother continues through her title of “Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal.”  When Catherine Labouré’s own mother died when she was but a nine-year-old girl, Catherine adopted Mary as her new mother. Mary cared so much for her newly adopted daughter that she came to Catherine bringing a gift to her—the Miraculous Medal. (To read the complete story of the Miraculous Medal, click here)

Along with her medal, the Blessed Mother brought a promise of love Miraculous Medal with rosesand kindness in the form of great graces to those who wore her medal and who approached her altar in confident prayer. She told Catherine this during her series of visits with this young Daughter of Charity in 1830 when she instructed Catherine to—

“Have a medal struck upon this model. Those who wear it will receive great graces, especially if they wear it around the neck,” and “Come to the foot of the altar. There graces will be showered on all who ask for them with confidence.”

Here at our Lady’s Association we receive thousands of letters sharing the answers people have received to their prayers. These letters attest to the graces our Lady bestows on those who ask for them. Some of the graces received are—
strength in time of trial
light in times of darkness
courage during stress and heartache
healings of body and spirit
work for the unemployed
reconciliation in families.
