Give back on Giving Tuesday

A few years ago someone came up with an idea for “Giving Tuesday.”  It’s a special day to remind us that the charitable season has begun.  We celebrate life’s many blessings by giving back to others and helping organizations achieve their missions. In keeping with this spirit, perhaps you will give an offering to our Lady’s Association to help us in our mission of attending to the pastoral and spiritual needs of those who long to be close to Jesus.  You may also consider a monthly gift to the Association, knowing your donation will continue throughout the year.  It is also a great time of year to offer someone the gift of a Miraculous Medal, sharing with them the story of our Lady’s appearance to Saint Catherine and her promise to obtain great graces for all who wear it and pray with confidence.  With this in mind, I invite you to visit our online gift shop and consider that every offering you make helps us continue the mission of bringing Jesus to the world through our Blessed Mother.  Click here to watch my message about giving back on Giving Tuesday.

Join our Miraculous Medal Novena

Our culture really does face serious challenges.  In the year 1830, when our Blessed Mother appeared to St. Catherine Labouré, life was a challenge too.  The situation seemed hopeless, just as it does for so many people today.  Mary gave Saint Catherine instructions to have a special medal made in 1830 and distributed throughout the world. Since then millions and millions of medals have been dispersed.  Read more about how Mary has touched the lives of those who have worn her medal and trusted in her intercession.  Our Blessed Mother is waiting to hear your prayers.  Allow the Association to pray with you.  Send your petitions for remembrance in our annual Miraculous Medal Novena, November 19-27, and request Votive Lights to burn.  To request your 15-month Miraculous Medal planner for 2016-2017, click here.

First-class relic of St. Catherine Labouré

Earlier this year a young man gifted the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal with an heirloom, first-class relic of St. Catherine Labouré.  We are honored and blessed that this young man chose to pass on this precious gift to us.  It will be available for veneration during our Miraculous Medal Novena, November 19 -27. To learn more about the relic and the times when it will be available for public veneration, visit our Shrine Events page.

On the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, we celebrate the fact that Mary, through grace, was conceived entirely free from every stain of sin, and from all corruption of body, soul, and mind.  Here at our Lady’s Shrine, we honor Mary’s holy innocence by celebrating the Immaculate Conception Novena beginning on Tuesday, December 8.  This day also marks the unsealing of the Holy Door and the start of the Jubilee Year of Mercy declared by Pope Francis. Since the National Shrine Church has been designated as a Holy Door for the Year of Mercy, I invite you to not only join us at Mary’s Altar during the novena, but to attend the special ceremony on December 8 at 2:00 p.m. CT as the Holy Door is unsealed.  Send your petitions to our Lady’s Shrine today to have them remembered during the Immaculate Conception NovenaTo read Fr. Mike’s letter about Mary’s Immaculate Conception, click here.  Request a bottle of our Blessed Mother Healing Oil

For thousands of years, healing oil has been a sign of abundance, joy, and health.  I want you and your loved ones to experience this.  For your suggested offering of $17 or more, you can request a bottle of Blessed Mother Healing Oil, which was blessed and touched to a relic of Saint Catherine Labouré here at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal.  Say this prayer to our Lady for healing when using this oil on yourself, your children, grandchildren, and anyone else in need of Mary’s motherly care and God’s healing love.  Read Father's letter for more information.

Offer someone you love prayer and comfort
Reaching out to loved ones who have lost a family member or close friend is a natural reaction. If you would like to bring Mary’s motherly concern and the love of Jesus to the bereaved in a special way, request a Memorial Remembrance Certificate from our Lady’s Association.  Use the card to offer prayer and comfort for someone suffering the loss of a loved one. Mary’s presence on the certificate will inspire others to realize that she stands by them in their sorrow just as she stood by Jesus as he died on the cross for us. Read more about the love and comfort Jesus and his Blessed Mother have for us.

November All Souls Remembrance

The bible teaches that heaven is a place of perfection and that nothing unclean can enter (Revelation 21:27).  Even if we die in God’s friendship, we may still possess spiritual imperfections that need to be “purged.”  This is what purgatory is for.  It is a state after death, in which we are fully cleansed in order that we may behold the perfection of God, face to face.  And this is why we pray for deceased family, friends, and all souls on November 2, All Souls Day, and through the month of November. Read more about praying for those in purgatory and heaven. Send me the names of your deceased relatives and friends along with the dates on which they passed away for remembrance in Mass on All Souls Day, November 2, throughout the month of November, and on their anniversary date in the coming year.
